Tips on Maintaining Oral Hygiene

When you visit a dentist that excels at general dentistry, one of the most basic questions that they will ask you is how you take care of your oral health. The most common answers that we often hear is that people brush their teeth in order to make sure they remain clean. However, oral health is more complicated than simple brushing. This is exactly what general dentistry deals in.

General dentistry aims towards the following main categories:

  • Preventive service
  • Restorative service
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Overall health concerns

Amongst these, oral hygiene formulates as the most basic form representing preventive service or overall health. Most people are unaware of how to take care of their oral health and if you’re amongst that group of people then this is just the post for you.

What you need to know

Oral health is directly in line with your overall health which is why general dentistry is so important. Here are a few tips that will help you significantly better your oral hygiene practice:

Tip #1: Brushing

This is a simple enough tip that everyone knows but there’s more depth to brushing than you might think. Here are some effective brushing routines that will help improve your technique:

-        Make sure you rinse your toothbrush well after brushing, and store it where a good airflow will reach the bristles.

-        Make sure you hold the brush at a 45-degree angle, direct it to the gum-line and brush using short, circular motions.

-        Make sure you brush your tongue as well.

-        Brush at least twice a day.

-        Make sure you change your toothbrush after every 3 months.

Tip #2: Flossing

Brushing is important but did you know that flossing holds just as much importance as brushing does? While brushing removes the plaque from your teeth, it still cannot be directed towards hard-to-reach places. In that case, it’s important to keep up with a good flossing.

Tip #3: Smoking

Smoking is bad for your overall health but did you know that it can have significant effect on your oral health as well. In some cases, it’s not just the smoking that contributes to the deterioration of teeth health, it’s the products you would use to mask the smell. These include sugar-filled candies, coffee, alcohol or soda, etc.

Tip #4: Dentist

Make sure you keep up with a good amount of appointments with your dentist so that any problem that may be starting to occur can be identified before it gets out of hand. Your dentist is not only able to clean your teeth but also make sure they are in excellent health.

Remember, your oral health is the main contributor to overall health. This starts with taking care of your teeth. So get started and make that smile shine!
